Project
Emergency hygiene, sanitation, and temporary-shelter assistance for flood-affected households in Nuwakot, and Dhading district
Description
About this project
On 26 August 2026, a flash flood in the Bhote Koshi River caused significant loss of life, displacement, and widespread damage in Rasuwa District and downstream areas of Nuwakot and Dhading Districts. The disaster resulted in the destruction and severe damage of houses, settlements, bridges, roads, hydropower facilities, businesses, agricultural land, and other community infrastructure. Essential services, including schools, health facilities, electricity infrastructure, water and sanitation facilities, and other public services, have also been affected. Damage to roads and bridges has left several communities difficult to access, creating additional challenges for search, rescue, relief, and humanitarian response operations.
The flood has significantly affected the livelihoods and living conditions of affected households. Many families have lost or experienced damage to their homes, personal belongings, household assets, agricultural resources, and other sources of income. As a result, affected households are facing immediate humanitarian needs, including safe drinking water, hygiene and sanitation materials, temporary shelter, clothing, medicines, and other essential household items. Children, pregnant and lactating women, older persons, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups may face heightened risks due to displacement, disruption of basic services, and inadequate access to safe and dignified living conditions.
In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, there is a critical need to support flood affected households in Rasuwa Nuwakot, and Dhading with essential hygiene, sanitation, and temporary-shelter assistance. Timely provision of these essential items will help affected families meet their immediate needs, maintain basic hygiene and dignity, reduce exposure to health and environmental risks, and improve their living conditions during the emergency period.
In response to these needs, Action Nepal will implement an Emergency Hygiene, Sanitation, and Temporary-Shelter Assistance for Flood-Affected Households project in selected flood-affected areas of Nuwakot, and Dhading Districts.
The intervention will include includes rapid verification of beneficiaries, procurement and distribution of emergency household packages, and post-distribution monitoring. The project will prioritize households that have been directly affected by the flood, particularly those whose homes have been destroyed or severely damaged and those facing significant challenges in accessing essential hygiene, sanitation, and temporary shelter items. The intervention will be implemented in coordination with relevant local governments, community representatives, and other concerned stakeholders to ensure that assistance is targeted, transparent, accountable, and responsive to the priority needs of affected communities.
The proposed emergency response will be implemented by Action Nepal with financial support from International Medical Corps (IMC), with the overall objective of contributing to the immediate protection, health, safety, dignity, and basic living conditions of flood-affected households in the targeted areas. Action Nepal implements all field-level activities (verification, procurement, distribution and follow-up, while IMC provides technical guidance, monitors implementation.
The project is aligned with Action Nepal’s commitment to supporting vulnerable and disaster-affected communities and contributes to the Government of Nepal’s emergency response priorities. It will contribute to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well being), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).
